Mirro pressure cooker gaskets can last for many years but their life depends on how well you care for your pressure cooker. Some of the signs to look for when you suspect your gasket is failing is if your gasket feels sticky or tacky, feels stretched out, or if you notice steam is escaping from underneath the lid. Never wash your pressure gasket in the dishwasher, instead wash it with mild soapy water and let it dry on a towel. When replacing your gasket, I also suggest replacing any other soft sealing part at the same time such as the blow-out plug.
Over time your Mirro pressure cooker gasket will wear out and need replaced. Fortunately, replacing a gasket is cheap and easy. You’ll be back to pressure cooking in no time. New gaskets are made out of silicon to create a better seal and last longer. Similar to rubber, silicon gaskets are easy to care for and will not retain odors.
It is important to maintain the integrity of the gasket by not stretching or pulling it as it will weaken or even tear. You should always inspect the gasket for rips, tears, and signs of wear before you begin your pressure cooking.
No matter how well you take care of your pressure cooker, sometimes overtime the parts simply wear out. I’ve also tried the off brand gaskets and they just don’t seal the same.
So whether you use your pressure cooker frequently or a couple times a month, I recommend keeping a spare Mirro pressure gasket in the drawer so that you’re never inconvenienced.
